In a recent rally held in New York, US President Donald Trump called on Americans to endure slightly increased gasoline prices as tensions with Iran persist. The disruption of shipping routes through the critical Strait of Hormuz has been a significant factor in these price changes. Trump emphasized that paying “a tiny little bit more” at the pump is a necessary compromise to ensure Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons. He also mentioned the possibility of claiming the Strait of Hormuz as US territory following a victory over Iran.
Iran, however, dismissed Trump’s assertions, maintaining its control over the Strait of Hormuz. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran would uphold its blockade until the US acknowledges what he termed the reality of its defeat. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that Tehran has yet to decide on resuming talks with the US, emphasizing that shipping through the strait will not recommence unless their conditions are met.
The ongoing standoff has significantly impacted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial channel for global oil and natural gas transportation. This uncertainty has led to a rise in crude oil prices, consequently increasing fuel costs. The average price of gasoline in the US has climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, marking a 29% increase from the previous year. Brent crude prices are also experiencing a notable weekly surge.
The economic repercussions extend to Iran as well. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has attributed the country’s rising inflation to the US-imposed blockade, sanctions, and restrictions on Iranian oil exports. Despite these challenges, the Trump administration has threatened further financial sanctions against Tehran as diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire remain at a standstill.
