In a shift in European aviation dynamics, Istanbul Airport has surpassed Heathrow Airport as the continent’s busiest airport for the month of July. During this period, Istanbul Airport managed to accommodate 8.15 million passengers, edging out Heathrow’s figure of 7.86 million. This development marks a significant change as Heathrow experiences a 1.5% decline in passenger numbers compared to the same month last year, whereas Istanbul enjoyed a 2.3% increase in traffic.
Heathrow’s reduced traffic has been linked to disruptions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This situation has intensified calls for the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s ambitious third runway project. Currently, Heathrow operates with two runways that are nearing full capacity. The proposed expansion, estimated at £33 billion, aims to boost the airport’s annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers, which is seen as crucial for enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism sectors.
Istanbul Airport, which began operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and a 24-hour operational schedule. It currently has three active runways, with a fourth slated to open by the end of 2026. This infrastructure advantage has positioned Istanbul as a formidable competitor on the European aviation stage, potentially reshaping travel routes and passenger preferences.
While Heathrow faces capacity challenges, other UK airports are experiencing growth. Notably, London Stansted and Manchester airports have reported their highest-ever passenger numbers for July, handling 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers, respectively. These figures highlight a broader trend of increasing air travel within the UK, despite Heathrow’s current setbacks.
